compounds

A.   Compounds     
Compound is the word formation process in which two or more words for making a new word. Compound words may be written as one word or as two words joined with a hyphen.
For example:
·        Compounds without hyphenated
Noun-noun compound: note + book → notebook
Adjective-noun compound: blue + berry → blueberry
Verb-noun compound: work + room → workroom
Noun-verb compound: breast + feed → breastfeed
Verb-verb compound: stir + fry → stir-fry
Adjective-verb compound: high + light → highlight
Verb-preposition compound: break+ up → breakup
Preposition-verb compound: out +run → outrun
Adjective-adjective compound: bitter + sweet → bittersweet
Preposition-preposition compound: in + to → into
·        Compounds with hyphenated
Noun – noun compound: Anchor + man = anchor-man
Adjective – noun compound: Hard + cover = hard-cover
Adverb – noun compound: In + law = in-law
Verb – adverb compound: Check + in = check-in
Noun – verb compound: Man + made = man-made
Adjective – verb compound: Short + cut = short-cut
Adverb – verb compound: Through + put = through-put
Noun – adverb compound: Head + on = head-on
Pronoun – noun compound: He + man = he-man


B.    Clippings
Clipping is the word formation process in which a word is reduced or shortened without changing the meaning of the word.
For example:
·        Clipping with the omission at the end of a word.
Advertisement = ad
Examination = exam
Gasoline = gas
Gymnasium = gym
Laboratory = lab
·        Clipping with the omission at the beginning of the word.
Alligator = gator
Raccoon = coon
Telephone = phone
Airplane = plane
Omnibus = bus

C.   Blending
Blending is the word formation process in which parts or two or more words combine to create a new word whose meaning is often a combination of the original words.
For example:
          Biographical + picture = biopic
          Breakfast + lunch = brunch
          Chuckle + snort = chortle
          Guess + estimate = guesstimate
          Motor + hotel = motel
          Smoke + fork = smog
          Telephone + marathon = telethon
          Web + seminar = webinar



         

D.   Abbreviations
Abbreviation is a short form of a word by leaving out letter or using only the first letter of each word and pronounced letter by letter.
For example:
          United Kingdom (UK)
          Compact Disk (CD)
          Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
          English for Specific Purpose (ESP) 

E.    Acronyms
Acronym is a word formed from the first letter of the words that make up the name of something.
For example:
United National Education, Science, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Light amplification by the Stimulated Emmision of Radiation (LASER).
Subscriber Identification Module (SIM).
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

F.    Back-formations
Back-formation is the word formation process in which an actual or supposed derivational affix detaches from the base form of a word to create a new word. For example:
Babysitter – babysit
Donation – donate
Gambler – gamble
Hazy- haze
Moonlighter – moonlight
Obsessive – obsess
Sassy – sass
Television - televise
